The Littoral Combat Ship USS Fort Worth (LCS 3) is scheduled to arrive at her new homeport of San Diego Oct. 18.
The ship, commissioned in a ceremony held in Galveston, Texas, Sept. 22, is the third littoral combat ship, and is designed to confront today’s threats. Cmdr. Randy Blankenship, commanding officer of the ship’s blue crew, said the crew performed admirably and are looking forward to reuniting with friends and family.
“We are especially excited to be reuniting with our families as we deliver the ship to the San Diego fleet, “ Blankenship said. “Our maiden voyage of more than 9,500 nautical miles has been challenging and full of many firsts for everyone to include driving through the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. Our Sailors have done an amazing job operating this ship for the very first time and flawlessly executing so many challenging evolutions with absolute professionalism and pride.”
Fort Worth is now officially a part of the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet and is the first to bear the name of the nation’s 16th largest city. The ship can travel in depths less than 20 feet and reach speeds in excess of 40 knots. The ship is designed to be agile and maneuverable as part of the Navy’s war-fighting arsenal.
