On July 29 in Hollywood the 46 Mommas will host their third annual Shave for the Brave event where team members traveling from cities across the U.S. and Canada will gather together to shave their heads to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer research. Founded in 2010, the 46 Mommas team supports the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to funding life-saving pediatric cancer research.

Why the number 46? The team represents the powerful statistic that each weekday 46 families receive the news that their child has cancer. With a goal of raising $1 million for research, the 46 Mommas team has raised more than $700,000 since its inception in 2010. Each member has personally been affected by childhood cancer or knows a family that has been affected, and many have a child who has fought or is currently fighting this disease. Sadly, some have lost a child to cancer but are committed to raising awareness and funds for a cure so that other families don’t have to face such a terrible loss.

Chris Brunson, a local mother from San Diego, will be joining the team this year. Chris, a 20-year Navy veteran and mother to Tyler, 17, will take the stage with the Mommas in honor of her son. In 2009, Tyler was diagnosed with Stage IV Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancerous (malignant) tumor of the muscles that are attached to the bones. After nine months of chemotherapy, radiation and numerous surgeries, Tyler was declared in remission, but in 2010, the cancer was back. Currently, Tyler and his family have exhausted all treatment options, and he is now at home with his family.
